Five of the most romantic cities to explore in Europe

February 5, 20263-4 min read

Celebrating a special anniversary, taking a trip for Valentine’s Day, or simply looking for a romantic getaway? There’s no shortage of swoon-worthy destinations in Europe. The region is home to some of the world’s most beautiful cities, where you can immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and culture - and perhaps enjoy a candle-lit meal for two.

We’ve put together a list of five of the most romantic destinations in Europe - of course, there are many more - and what to do while you’re there, providing some inspiration for your city-break planning.

  • Venice, Italy

It’s hard to think of a more classically romantic experience than gliding down a Venetian canal in a gondola, but there is even more to explore in Venice. Some of Italy’s finest art is contained in the Gallerie dell’Accademia, while the Palazzo Ducale - which was built in 1340 and was formerly the residence of the supreme authority of the former Republic of Venice - is one of Italy’s most important and visually impressive landmarks.

There’s no shortage of delicious food, including some must-try local delicacies. You’ll find bacari - traditional Venetian wine bars - throughout the city, serving small glasses of wine which are typically paired with cicchetti, bite-sized finger food.

  • Budapest, Hungary

With the River Danube flowing through its heart, the Hungarian capital is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Budapest is perhaps best known for its steamy thermal pools, and is even referred to as the City of Baths. A trip to soak in one of the city’s numerous baths - which are fed by natural hot springs - is a must for your itinerary.

Walking around the city, you’ll find many bridges crossing the Danube - in fact, Budapest’s ‘chain bridge’, the Széchenyi Lánchíd, is one of its most famous architectural sights. Another iconic landmark not to be missed is the Fisherman's Bastion, a historic castle in the city centre. Its rooftop cafe on the terrace is the perfect place to sip a coffee while taking in the panoramic views of the city.

  • Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon offers a unique blend of historic cobbled streets and sandy stretches of beach - perfect for a romantic getaway. If you’re not keen on climbing the city’s hilly streets while you sight-see, hop on one of the iconic vintage yellow trams, which will get you around the city for just a few Euros.

The city has a growing arts scene, and is renowned for its ceramicists - you’ll find tiling throughout Lisbon’s streets, owing to Portugal’s rich history of ceramics which goes back centuries. Visit a ceramics shop to peruse the wares and pick up a handmade piece to take home with you. You may even see a potter in action!

Finally, it wouldn't be a trip to Lisbon without enjoying a local pastel de nata - a custard pastry that is one of Portugal’s most famed exports.

  • Prague, Czech Republic

The Czech capital is rich in history, art and food. Famed for its Gothic architecture, it’s one of the prettiest cities in Europe and has a reputation for having the best beer in the region.

There are several historical landmarks not to be missed during a trip to the city. The Astronomical Clock, constructed during the Medieval period, is the oldest working clock on the planet and sits in Prague’s Old Town Square; Charles Bridge, built in the 1300s across the Vltava River, offers picturesque views of the city and is typically brimming with musicians and vendors; and Prague Castle, perched on a hilltop, is more than 1000 years old and is Unesco World Heritage-listed.

As well as admiring the architecture, a visit to one of Prague’s coffee houses - which range from traditional to modern - is a must. And alongside many restaurants offering local dishes, you can try cuisines from around the world at Manifesto Market, an outdoor food market in the Andel district.

  • Paris, France

No list of romantic cities would be complete without including Paris - the City of Love.

Well-known for its bistros and boulangeries, Paris is a gastronomic gem. From Michelin-starred restaurants to local cafes, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Some of the city’s most famous foods include coq au vin, a French chicken casserole, steak frites, a classic bistro dish, and the humble pain au chocolat.

This sprawling city is packed with art and museums too. Start with a trip to see the Mona Lisa at the Musée du Louvre, where you can also admire the impressive glass pyramid entrance, then head over to the Centre Pompidou - Europe’s largest collection of modern art - to check out some contemporary masterpieces. For fans of Monet, you’ll find a number of his famous artworks dotted across various galleries in the city.

Lastly, visit the iconic Eiffel Tower at night to catch the evening light show, which happens at the beginning of every hour, starting at dusk. Take a trip up to the top of the tower by elevator, which you’ll need to buy a ticket for, or simply admire the 300-meter structure from the ground as it sparkles against the Paris skyline.
